THE QUEST CENTER:

For those individuals who do not qualify for Project QUEST’s long-term training program we opened The QUEST Center.  The QUEST Center creates a safety net for individuals to receive services in three core areas:  Job Training and Development, Work and Income Supports and Wealth Building and Protecting Assets.  Prior to the creation of this program individuals who did not qualify for Project QUEST were referred to the City’s Literacy Centers, and many times fell through the cracks and never received further assistance.  The QUEST Center is open to all residents who live in Bexar County.  The QUEST Center also connects individuals to: QUEST Prep, a fast track remediation program aimed at assisting the participant with academic attainment in order to enroll in Project QUEST.

Job Training and Development
For those individuals who do not qualify for our long-term training programs we provide referral to other training programs (short-term) in San Antonio.  Additionally, we provide referral to job placement services with employers who provide on-the-job training.

Work and Income Support

Federal and State Programs:
Qualification and application for Food Stamps, TANF, Children's Medicaid, and CHIP will be taken at the Center and delivered to The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) by our Center staff. Through a Memorandum of Understanding, HHS and the Center will work closely together to help streamline the application process so that our families do not have to wait in long lines at the HHS office. Our Center staff will serve as a liaison between HHS and the families, so that they never have to physically go to a HHS office. Applications taken on a walk-in basis – no appointment necessary.

Utility Assistance:
Additionally, through our partnerships with Catholic Charities and Bexar County we are able to assist with qualification and application for Utility Assistance (CPS & SAWS). Applications taken on a walk-in basis – no appointment necessary

Food Pantry:
Our food pantry is open Monday and Wednesday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. to serve low income families in need of emergency food.

Building Wealth and Protecting Your Assets

Financial Education:
Wealth creation is essential to our families' ability to move out of poverty. Our Center focuses on education about sub-prime and predatory auto and home loan practices, foreclosures, credit repair, and budget and finance counseling. We also provide education about Taxpayer rights and responsibilities so that families will take advantage of unclaimed earned income tax refunds from Earned Income Tax Credit. If you are interested in one-on-one counseling or attending a Financial Education Class please call our office at (210) 630-4633.

Home Ownership Services:
If you are experiencing difficulty paying your mortgage payment or are behind in payments please contact our office for an appointment.  Our staff may be able to assist you. Additionally, to help families retain and build assets, the Center assists individuals with applications for housing rehabilitation programs, and first time homeownership programs.

Tax Assistance:
Did you or your family earn an income of less than $40,000 last year? If so, you are eligible to receive free tax preparation. Community volunteers will help prepare basic, current year tax returns for eligible taxpayers free of charge. Electronic filing is also available for FAST REFUNDS. Taxpayers eligible to participate in this program may also qualify for the Earned Income Tax and Child Tax Credits.

Low Income Tax Clinic:
Low Income Taxpayer Clinics (LITCs) represent low income taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in audit, appeals, and collection issues, and federal tax litigation for free. The clinic also provide educational workshops on tax issues to taxpayers for whom English is a second language. If you have a tax issue we may be able to assist you. An appointment is required. Please call (210) 630-4636.
