Lina Rosales’s Story – RN Grad from San Antonio College 2008

I came to QUEST having faced great challenges at a very young age. As a teen parent, I learned early in life how to stand up for myself. My newborn child was born prematurely and had health problems requiring constant care. Unfortunately my family criticized me rather than supported me. They did not expect me to complete high school. Still, I persevered, cared for my child, and graduated from high school.

I understood that I needed to have good employment to be able to care for my child and myself. I decided to pursue registered nurse training. My baby and I survived on child support, food stamps, and SSI. We moved forward with my financial aid and, equally through Project QUEST resources. Those additional resources enabled me to complete my Associate Degree in Nursing.

Determined to succeed, I sought advice on study skills, budgeting, and community resources. My quest to become a nurse gave me the energy to stay on task and not give up. I studied hard and maintained a 3.0 GPA. In May 2008, my dream became a reality when I graduated from San Antonio College as a Registered Nurse. Shortly after graduation I passed the state board exam and became employed at a local hospital. To continue caring for my son, I accepted a shift that allowed me to work three days and be off four days. My wages and benefits ensure a bright future for my son and I.

The challenges I faced were many, but with Project QUEST’s assistance I was able to accept life’s adversity and move forward to success.
